#Ahwazna – Ahwazi Arabs protest against Karoon River diversion

On Thursday, 4 September 2014, thousands of Ahwazi Arab residents gathered by the bank of Karoon river in Ahwaz capital protesting the regime vicious scheme in diverting the karoon’s water to the Iran central region and have called on Jerry Lewis, the United Nations Commissioner and Chairman of the human development programme in Tehran and asked him to take action and intervene to stop the Karoon diversion which is said would have serious environmental implications on Ahwazi people.

In today’s protest, people men and women with carrying Arabic, English, and Persian Banners that read, “International community should pay very close attention to what’s happening in Ahwaz due to the effects of climate change”, “ Karoon belongs to Ahwaz”, “I am farmer”, “we will die for the sake of saving Karoon”, “we will save Karoon” demanded all the human rights and UN organization to speak out against the possible environmental massacre in Ahwaz whose people are deprived of drinking water for years suffering from air pollution as since 2011 until 2014, the World Health Organization has repeatedly declared that Ahwaz region, was the most polluted city in the world, with high asthma levels among children and teenagers due to industrial waste and emissions.
