061114-N-8591H-147 Pacific Ocean (Nov. 14, 2006) - Aircraft assigned to Carrier Air Wing Five (CVW-5) fly over a group of 18 U.S. and Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force ships, at the conclusion the two nations' exercise ANNUALEX. The exercise is designed to improve both forces' capabilities in the defense of Japan. Approximately 8,500 U.S. Sailors are taking part aboard 13 ships, submarines and various shore-based aircraft. About 90 JMSDF ships and 130 aircraft are also participating. Ships taking part in the exercise-ending photo shoot were the aircraft carrier USS Kitty Hawk (CV 63), two guided-missile cruisers, two Military Sealift Command oilers, two submarines, seven guided-missile destroyers and four JMSDF destroyers.
